Synarthroses |
Fibrous joints, there is no joint space, joint fluid or cartilage E.g. Skull sutures, temporohyoid joint, tooth socket |
|
Amphiarthroses |
Cartilagenous joints, they have cartilage but no joint space or joint fluid E.g. rib costochondral junction, mandibular symphysis, growth plates of long bones in growing animals |
|
Diarthroses |
Synovial joints. They have cartilage, joint space and joint fluid as well as synovial lining. They have the greatest range of movement of all joint types E.g. all of the long bone joints (knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, carpus, tarsus, phalangeal joints), spinal articular facets, sacroiliac, temporomandibular joint. |
We will focus almost exclusively on Diarthroses, or synovial joints, as it is in these joints that the greatest range of pathologies tends to occur and where our intervention is most often required.
